Archetypes resurface again

The veteran band plays the Pour House

Led by grinning singer Tommy Dew, businessman and downtown tour guide, the Archetypes were huge in Charleston in the late '80s and early '90s. They played frat parties, clubs, and festivals with jangly style of college rock.

Last March, the band reunited as part of the sixth annual Suzy McGrane Memorial at the Charleston Harbor Resort's new Lookout Pavilion. Dew and original guitarists Kevin Wadley and Joey Allawos performed with backing from a few guest players: Hank Futch (the bassist of the Blue Dogs), drummer Tommy Hamer (of The Fire Apes), and guitarist Dave Stewart (of both The Blue Dogs and the Fire Apes). Apparently, the vibes, sounds, and crowd reaction were so good, they had to do yet another gig in town.

On Sat. Aug. 21, the Archetypes will share the Pour House stage with singer/guitarist Bobby Houck (of the Blue Dogs). The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $12. Visit for more.
