Part of Piccolo Spoleto's Choral Artist Series. The Anderson University Chamber Singers presents a concert featuring songs of Spain and Latin America along with classics, spirituals and traditional choral arrangements. The Chamber Singers, a group of about 25 voices, is the newest and most select choral ensemble of Anderson University in Anderson, S.C. (1 hr.)
WHAT IS IT? This respected Piccolo series will feature four top-drawer out-of-town choirs, plus three leading local ensembles, strutting their vocal stuff in turn at St. Philip’s Church.
WHY SEE IT? Piccolo planners choose their choirs carefully, knowing what it takes to please Chucktown’s picky choral fans. Most of the visiting choirs — like the Antioch Chamber Choir and the Southern Appalachian Chamber Singers — have wowed Piccolo crowds in past festivals. And both of Robert Taylor’s participating choirs, the College of Charleston Concert Choir and the Taylor Festival Choir, were honored at prestigious national choral conventions just this year. If you can’t get into the Cathedral to hear the big festival’s Westminster Choir, these events will provide ample consolation.
WHO SHOULD GO? Thanks to our rich local choral tradition, Charleston positively crawls with choral fans who will revel in these concerts. Those new to classical choral music will get a great introduction to the choral arts. (Lindsay Koob)
