Amish Guide to Fucking tickles non-puritanical funny bones

See this one with an open mind

My suspicions were confirmed last night when Kurt Braunohler took the stage: He's one awkwardly hilarious guy. The Amish Guide to Fucking, Braunohler's one man show, takes the audiences on a campy journey through his failed relationship with a girlfriend of 13 years. At least that was how he had dubbed it. In hindsight I'd say the show was more like a series of stand-up jokes, interrupted by bursts of dialogue.

Braunohler kept the audience laughing the entire show. One of the highlights was when he explained how he has a "tod bod." Which is to say when he's naked, he looks like a giant toddler. Or how by college his favorite snack was a Baltimore Barrito, a bag of Utz potato chips covered in 7-Eleven chili cheese, then systematically closed up, smashed, and squeezed into his mouth. Brauohler's life, or at least the snippets he shares in Amish Guide, is all in jest. Having taken a break from his 13 year relationship with his girlfriend — in Amish society, teens are allowed to leave the church to do what they like for a period of time before later rejoining it — he finds it's difficult to jump back into the dating game. So he begins to respond to Missed Connections on Craigslist to highly amusing effect.

Note, this show is not for everyone. Upon leaving Theatre 99, an older set — I'd say a group around 60 — complained that the show "must be for younger people." Needless to say, they did not seem amused. Braunohler's show does have a lot of swearing and sex jokes, so if you're thinking this is going to be an actual puritanical production a la the Amish title, think again. Come with an open mind and a liberal attitude and you'll have a blast, or don't come at all.
