Funky rock band ALO (a.k.a. Animal Liberation Orchestra) formed in 2002 at the University of California at Santa Barbara and made their way into the jam-rock scene with a clean, melodic, pop-leaning style. In 2005, they caught the ear of fellow Californian Jack Johnson and signed to his Brushfire Records label, releasing a handful of cleanly produced, groove-based collections over the last few years. Lead singer keyboardist/guitarist Zach Gill, drummer David Brogan, bassist/singer Steve Adams, and guitarist/singer Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz return to the Lowcountry in support of their fourth album, Sounds Like This (Brushfire). “We made a conscious decision to take a different approach with this new album,” say guitarist Lebowitz. “We tried to go for a live show sound, and we told ourselves to imagine that we were performing at a sold-out show. We used that as our guide— I think that’s why it has a different energy this time around.” Much of Sounds Like This sticks with straight-ahead rhythms and standard arrangement, but Gill’s sophisticated (if sometimes almost spoken) vocal melodies and his bandmates’ intricate flourishes create a pleasant texture. “We stuck with some of the original takes rather than fine-tuning things too much,” Lebowitz says. “It’s not necessarily an aggressive album. I think it’s more of an outgoing album.”
