Tired of the predictable plots and cheesy one-liners of made-for-TV romcoms? College of Charleston’s Theatre Department has a new take on the classic love story with the college’s Shakespeare Project production of All’s Well That Ends Well. Now in its 15th year, the Shakespeare Project is the oldest and longest-running theater group in Charleston that regularly performs Shakespeare’s works. This lesser-known Bard play tells an unlikely love story between the stuck-up nobleman Bertram and the wise, independent Helena. After Bertram’s immature behavior leads to Helena’s humiliation, she must find a way to balance her own desires with Bertram’s shortcomings. “It affords the actors an opportunity to delve into some marvelously complex characterizations in a comedic setting,” says director Cristy Landis. “The play is at different moments witty, raunchy, romantic, poignant, and sweet, so in rehearsal we get to laugh, be silly, and yet are moved by real moments of very human emotion.” If you’re in the audience opening night, stick around for a talkback discussion with the cast and crew.
