Before The Fugitive and Enemy of the State, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps set the stage for mistaken-identity thrillers. Based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan and brought to the silver screen by Hitch in 1935, The 39 Steps follows a man, mistaken for a spy, on a chase across the U.K. Four actors will play 130 roles in Charleston Stage’s production — characters include secret agents, murderers, and beautiful women. —Erica Jackson
