AI goes Hollywood glam for opening of digital studios

Red carpet welcome

Charleston’s filmmaking community celebrated its newest addition Tuesday night as the Art Institute of Charleston launched their Digital Filmmaking & Video Production and Photographic Imaging Studios. (We know, it’s a mouthful.) Guests entered the party on a red carpet, with automatic cameras capturing their grand entrance — I for one experienced a deer-in-headlights moment and would shudder to see the result. Situated right on the harbor in the same building as the Hippodrome Theatre, the school is a vision in exposed brick and shiny, high-tech equipment. Bartenders adeptly mixed vintage cocktails (think Sidecars, Manhattans) for guests, who also enjoyed a bounty of delicious passed hors d’oeuvres like chicken lo mein in mini take-out boxes and white chocolate mousse with a pomegranate reduction. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests explored the classrooms filled with computers, cameras, and big screens playing classic movies. The hallways were lined with photographs from AI students and professors. Students proudly walked around their new space, while prospective students chatted with admissions folks about the program. The Studios are an exciting addition to the growing harbor-front area, the Art Institute, and Charleston as a whole.
