Mark Marhefka, owner of Abundant Seafood, has been deemed “the captain of the sea.” He supplies his fresh catch to some of Charleston’s best restaurants. On certain days of the season, he conducts his CSF (Community Supported Fishery) on the dock next to Geechie Seafood on Shem Creek, unloading fish from his boat to an insulated cooler. As customers arrive, he guts and scales triggerfish, grouper, and vermilion snapper. The bones are sent to Sweetgrass Garden to create Native American-style, hyper-fertile compost. One CSF season lasts 12 weeks; the spring season half-share (for 15 pounds) costs $120, or a full share (for 30 pounds) costs $240. That’s $8 a pound for super-fresh, wild-caught fish.
