Part of the Spotlight Concert Series. (90 min.)

The Buzz:

WHAT IS IT? Now in its 11th season, the World of Jewish Culture series began as a celebration of the 50th birthday of the modern state of Israel. This year’s series offers what promises to be a diverse array of music from folk to opera.

WHY SEE IT? Last year’s 60th birthday festivities were a success, and this year’s offerings look just as good. The title performance gives us CSO concertmaster Yuriy Bekker and Caramoor Virtuosi member Andrew Armstrong in a program of 19th- and 20th-century composers with Jewish roots, including Rubinstein, Bernstein, and Schoenfeld. Returning favorites soprano D’jaris Whipper-Lewis and bass baritone Daniel Washington join members of Chamber Music Charleston for a down-scale version of Porgy and Bess. And Simkhe offers everything from traditional folk to Broadway to Klezmer!

WHO SHOULD GO?
Chamber music fans looking for a solid fix would be well advised not to miss the Bekker/Armstrong combination. Opera buffs and those looking for a taste of the Lowcountry should be thrilled to hear Gershwin in an intimate setting. And there’s nothing like good Klezmer to move you, and get you moving!
