Charleston's gay cred is climbing steadily. Nationally, folks might scoff at the idea of any place in South Carolina being a LGBT destination, but the Holy City's more reactionary neighbors only serve to enhance its reputation as a regional hotspot. Whether you're gay or straight, what Charleston's gay bar/club scene lacks in numbers, it makes up for in variety.
Club Pantheon
28 Ann St.
(843) 577-2582
Pantheon is a great dance-party destination, and they do drag on Friday and Sunday nights. It's the kind of place where you show up, dance your face off, and pretend you're Lady Gaga while ignoring your telephone.
Dudley's
42 Ann St.
(843) 577-6779
If you're not really the dance party type, Dudley's is a laid-back joint on Ann Street just a minute or so from Pantheon. It tends to attract an older clientele, and there's a pool table as well.
Patrick's Pub
1377 Ashley River Road. West Ashley
(843) 571-3435
Patrick's attracts a steady local crowd. It's another place with a dance floor that's usually raging. Patrick's also does drag nights and plenty of different theme nights. Plus, they're open seven days a week.
Déjà Vu II
4628 Spruill Ave. North Charleston
(843) 554-5959
A Charleston mainstay, Déjà Vu II is one of two gay-friendly bars located in Park Circle. You can grab some good grub, especially on Thursdays when owner Rita serves up her famous chicken wings. They also offer trivia and karaoke on various nights.
The Chart
1078 East Montague Ave. North Charleston
(843) 225-9949
The second, and newer, gay-friendly bar in Park Circle, The Chart is a hang-out that passes for a lounge and dinner spot as well as a dance club. They bring in a sushi chef to serve up rolls on Thursday night, and there's live music on Friday and a DJ on Saturday.
