Gotta Getta Gullah Cookbook

Restaurateur Charlotte Jenkins has been getting lots of attention for her happy little Gullah Cuisine restaurant in Mt. Pleasant for years. Now, Charlotte has teamed up with writer Dennis Comer to compile her recipes in a Gullah Cuisine Cookbook. The project began when Comer met Pier Penic, a friend of Jenkins' daughter, through an African-American book club. When Comer told Penic that he was working on a graduate degree in publishing at George Washington University, she knew he'd be perfect for the project. Comer spent some time at Gullah Cuisine and gathered recipes, which include sweet potato fritters, Awendaw shellfish stew, okra gumbo, Gullah rice, baked stuffed flounder, venison burgers, pinto bean pie, and more. Comer expects to have the cookbook ready by the end of March and it will be available for purchase in the restaurant, and eventually on He's developing a website to promote the book and hopes to have it completed by New Year's to highlight the traditional Gullah New Year's meal. –Stephanie Leighs

Maverick Promotion

High Cotton Executive Chef Jason Scholz has left for Greenville to open a new High Cotton restaurant in the upstate, and he's taken SNOB's night manager with him. Scholz, who's been with High Cotton since its inception, recently tied the knot with Julia Romano and the two have headed off to Greenville. The new High Cotton's grand opening is scheduled for February. While Greenville may be getting one brilliant duo, Charleston patrons shouldn't be too worried as the talents in the Maverick Group run pretty deep. Sous Chef Anthony Gray has been promoted to executive chef in the kitchen where he's been working alongside Scholz since the beginning. Maverick promises that not much will change in the downtown kitchen. –Stephanie Barna

Sanctuary's Sparkling New Diamonds

Last week, a bag of scrumptious pastries accompanied The Sanctuary's announcement that it had been awarded five diamonds by AAA. We're not surprised that they got on the coveted list, which includes only 93 other hotels. Two of those hotels – The Hermitage in Nashville and The Jefferson in Richmond – are sister properties of The Sanctuary. Downtown's Wentworth Mansion and Summerville's Woodlands Resort & Inn are the only other five-diamond hotels in the state. The Dining Room at Woodlands also ranks as the only five-diamond restaurant in S.C. On the four-diamond restaurant list: Tristan earned its rep back after a change of ownership, and Charleston Grill, Circa 1886, Cypress, Grill 225, McCrady's, Palmetto Cafe, Sienna, Peninsula Grill, and Wentworth Grill kept their diamonds intact. –SB
