A Celebration of Mavis Staples
Wed., June 6, 5:30 p.m. 2012
The Charleston Friends of the Library are teaming up with Spoleto Festival USA to celebrate one of the most legendary performers in pop music history. Starting in the 1950s as part of the Staples Singers, Mavis Staples came into the spotlight in the ’60s in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and has stayed strong ever since. She’s collaborated with some of the best and biggest in the industry — like Bob Dylan, Prince, and Ry Cooder. As a winner of the National Endowment for the Arts and with a spot in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, the strength and longevity of Staples’ career is obvious: Basically, she’s a badass. Join the Friends Wednesday night for a reception at Spoleto headquarters for a chance to socialize and to get an inside peek at the inner-workings of planning the festival. Afterward, head on down to the Gaillard to see the night’s leading lady in her only Spoleto performance for the year. “It’s a great deal, because the money benefits the programs in Charleston County libraries,†says Charleston Library Friends Director Emily Everett. Rebekah Jacob and Marcus Amaker will provide entertainment.
