What was once the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Charleston is now like other Rev restaurants (Taco Boy, Closed for Business, Royal American) - a dumbed down theme restaurant. Sad to see the family run Sushi Hiro usurped by this shrewd restaurant group.

100% right Cid. One thing Ive long complained about is lack of real ethnic diversity in the food scene.

Yeah, I'm going to be that guy...

"Real" Japanese Izakaya food would, for the most part, not be commercially successful in Charleston, I think. It would absolutely be greatly loved by some few of us, but we wouldn't all be eating there 3-4 nights per week.

Baby Octopus (Iidako), Takemono (pickled bamboo), Tsukemono Moriawase (mixed pickled radishes and other vegetables), Tsukune (chicken meatballs, but with bits of crunchy bone in them), Surume Ika (grilled squid), Kushiyaki (grilled foods on wooden skewers, like chicken livers or hearts in addition to chicken meat or beef tongue), etc...would they sell a lot?

We were saddened this week, after visiting the restaurant for lunch, to see the decline of this once great place—until now, offering the best and most authentic Japanese cuisine in the area. The newly-revamped ramen house is the culinary equivalent of Musak.

Normally I hate the "I lived suchandsuch therefore I know the real deal" kind of comments, but yea, I agree. Hopefully they get it together, I would love to see them nail these dishes

Went there recently -- we were excited to find a place that went beyond sushi to make a wider range of Japanese dishes. We used to love just such a place in Boston.
