I really love this argument: "Black churches do it, so why does it matter if a white church does it?"
I don't care what color your skin is, if you are using a church as your soapbox to push a political agenda, you should not be tax exempt. Further more, due to the immoral nature of politics in general, no "good Christian" leader should lower themselves to the level of playing that game.

But just today I realized that once taxed, the muzzle is off for good, and they will step up their opinion mongering agenda until they have completely taken over.

It is from being a committed Christian and churchgoer that I have come to the belief that the church, in order to maintain its critical distance from the powers-that-be and in order to maintain its true identity which sets it apart from and over-against the powers-that-be, should pay the same taxes as any other institutional property owner.

To accept any favor from the rulers of "this city" is for the church to inevitably compromise its absolute commitment to the ruler of and its citizenship in "that city which is to come."

If there was a clear separation, and it was always recognized as such, why was it not recognized and had to be litigated in the Supreme Court?

Answer - It didn't exist until the court made it so.

Ok Fox News Teleprompter lets do this:

You say that there is nothing in the constitution that says there is no separation of Church and State in the Constitution which is true if you have no ability to read into symbolism and have an absolute lack of knowledge of our founding fathers. It says in the first amendment "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ...."

By the way, I would challenge the author's assertion that "those rights come with the price of being a contributing, tax-paying member to the larger society" in regards to political speech. Political speech is a constitutional right, and you cannot hinge a person (or organization's) constitutional rights on whether they pay taxes and contribute to society.

Here's the question: Should government have the authority to threaten churches with taxation for speaking out against politicians?

If there is a conflict between free speech and taxation, the problem is not with free speech. The problem is with our tax laws.

I continue to shudder at the spectacle of community leaders (which clergy often are for their congregants) who stupidly or deceitfully conflate the tax-exempt status of their organization with their (or their organization's) rights to free speech.

So, clergy, to put it simply: no one is saying that you cannot lay claim to one political candidate or party, however, you cannot use your pulpit to do this and retain tax-exempt status. Those are the rules under which tax exemptions are granted.
