Is the real reason that Dana Beach and the Coastal Conservation League opposed to the completion of I-526 is to justify the waste of tax dollars replacing the old draw bridges across the Stono River and the Limehouse bridge connecting Johns Island? At that time, common sense would have been to put those bridges in the path of the proposed I-526.

Authoritative studies have concluded that extending I-526 as proposed would only cut 7-8 minutes off Johns Island or James Island commute times. That is NOT worth half a billion dollars of scarce infrastructure money!

Also - the hurricane evacuation flag Joe Riley and others are waving is false.

It is not just to serve James and Johns Island, unless you go with Alternative G. If I-526 were properly finished (and I hope it happens quite soon), then it would connect downtown Charleston as well. As far as "Mr. Beach" if he was quoted accurately in the P&C this morning, those like me who support the completion of I-526 are not "going underground" And if he said the 526 supporters (including me) are "cowards" then he has abused his right to speak for the Coastal Conservation League and anyone with a calm temperament, and should be removed from his lofty perch ASAP.

I don't think it's rational to deny that there are already serious problems with infrastructure and traffic in this area and while building roads is not the answer, neither is just sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the problems.

Why the never ending drama? Well, here you have an extraordinarily expensive project that is both low functioning and low priority - either one of which should eliminate the highway from consideration.

Those of you who were here when a route was first proposed around Charleston to James and Johns Islands may remember the hullabaloo. The SC Highway Dept. planned to build a highway through what is now the Cactus Car Wash and K-Mart, the subdivisions behind K-Mart (including mine), across Elliots Cut, onto James Island (through Riverland Terrace), and then over to Johns Island, and then back to the mainland.
The neighbors were not very happy with that plan.
