While that was the case in 1939, it's not like that anymore, nor has it been for quite some time.

The point is that Superman and Batman and all the rest could stay busy day after day, night after night, saving the masses without ever having to punch a common crook in the face.

And you might want to let Art Spiegelman know that there's no underlying import to comics. Maybe he will throw out the Pulitzer prize he won for Maus.

All comic books are written and printed as commercial entertainment. They have price wars, they get revenue from ads for absurd products like 50 yard eavesdropping devices, Charles Atlas exercise books and x-ray glasses that can see through brasseres.

There is no sociological trend or message from the creators, only the keen appreciation of what will get tweener boys to part with four bits.

The elevation of Batman and other comics to movies has NOT changed the escapist nature of this genre.

We go to watch the Dark Knight simply to suspend disbelief and get caught up in the spectacle of the 4"x4" panels on the big screen.

An article about what drives us to that might have some insight, but no one but pretentious blowhards like Matt Taibbi think there is any underlying import to comics.
