Great story. Could there be more than fairness behind the aquarium’s decision to “refrain from taking sides?” Didn’t the SC Aquarium recently participate in a local event with SAFA representatives, as reported in this very publication?

The SAFA and EDF are passively supporting the derby fisheries that are wasting TONS of fish, destroying our jobs, and killing fishermen in what appears to be a malicious attempt to advance catch shares. I have repeatedly asked both "charities" to support Trip Poundage Limits that are adjusted after 75% of a quota has been caught to levels that fill quotas without long closures while we debate catch shares.

I place little stock in any statements coming out of the "sustainable" seafood initiative at the SC Aquarium. This is because they irresponsibly promote UNSUSTAINABLE fisheries as being something they are not - namely, sustainable.

Two examples:

- Their fact sheet on Blue Crabs:
http://scaquarium.org/ssi/PDFS/fact_sheets…

claims that "Blue Crabs are harvested in baited traps which have little effect on the ecosystem".

"it is time fishermen and others who make a living from the world's limited and live resources start grooming new skills and let the fish regroup"

Your simplistic and naive solution is an affront to the men and women who have earned an honest living from a natural resource for generations. While there clearly needs to be more fishery management to protect the resource, to suggest halting the industry entirely is unreasonable at best.
