We raised 50 - 100 chickens a year (to eat) when I was a kid. We would buy day old chicks for 25 cents apiece in the spring and raise them on bushels of free grain recovered from a nearby railroad siding (where grain was loaded on freight cars).

I would like to clarify that I meant to use the word murder. Anything I would have done to those Eastern European roosters would have been vendetta, or at least a crime of passion.

Murder is a word with a specific meaning. Killing an animal to eat it isn't murder when we do it, any more than it is when they do it to their prey.

      (tangent time)

My favorite part of walking through Whole Foods are the signs in the meat areas talking about "humane" treatment and "good living conditions"....

And I think, yes, that's nice. Give a cow or chicken or hog an idyllic life of comfort or bliss....

And then slit its throat.

Meat's murder, that's just a fact.

So, you've either got to stop eating it or you've got to decide that what you're really against is less about the condition and treatment of the animals and more about the economic and public health concerns raised by factory farms and multinational agricultural firms.

In the meantime I'll just be continuing being one of the millions of people who don't kill their own food, thank you very much.
