<![CDATA[The original Painkiller invented in 1971, according to Beachbum Berry, was made with Mount Gay and dark Cruzan rums, so I'm not sure how the poster below me can claim that it can only use Pusser's (they did trademark the name for sale of bottled beverage, not the recipe itself in 1989) except that they probably work for Pusser's.

<![CDATA[The worldwide Painkiller trademark is owned by Pusser's Rum Ltd., a British Virgin Islands international business corp. The original Painkiller was invented in the late 70's by Daphne Henderson, an Aussie, who owned the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the BVI. The recipe was further refined and made commercially feasible by good friend, Charles Tobias, founder of Pusser's West Indies, owner of the rum, retail and restaurant trademarks throughout the world.

<![CDATA[I first had a Painkiller (and was immediately converted) at Pusser's Pub & Restaurant in Annapolis. Pusser's Rum is based out of the British Virgin Islands and claims to be the only rum that uses the (formerly) official recipe of the British Royal Navy.
