having vacationed on James island for several wonderful years i would like to attest to the quality and terrific variety of the food at what was once a successfully operated 11 center street wine and gourmet restaurant on Folly Beach. It is impossible to ever believe that they could have fallen on "hard times".

I have not eaten at this restaurant and have no idea whether the bad reviews or the good ones are accurate but my opinion of the Crab House which owns this place) is that these are businesses, not restaurants even though i am sure they work hard to make the food good and use the intelectual tools of the trade to keep things fresh.
BUT, when several identical restaurants open around town it is obvious that these are money lovers not food lovers.

Calling the service at Conch slow would be paying an undue compliment as it was completely non-existent on my visit. We sat upstairs, which is a great location, although it feels as if you are at an Applebee's on the beach, but did not receive any service until I went to the bar to ask for drinks and see if we could order food.

I wouldn't call the recent changes in eating establishments on Folly a renaissance. Following the demise of 11 Center, Cafe Suzanne, the Marina, and to some extent, the Sandbar, all I can say is that the beach is reverting to the way it used to be in the "old days" -- a bunch of third-rate dives with terrible food and domestic beer.

If Conch is setting 'the same high standards' of the Crap House, you can bet it's a lousy restaurant. The sick part is that there are probably enough tourists about to be ripped off as well as a smattering of very stupid locals (as these comments clearly indicate) that will probably keep this place open for a while.

I know Jeff, and I used to be the restaurant critic for the City Paper, and I can tell you this: Jeff knows his stuff, has no hidden agenda or ties to any of the Folly restaurants, and calls it like he sees it.

If you go through Jeff's past reviews, including his one of Taco Boy, you'll see that he almost always visits restaurants on more than one occasion so that he can get a well-rounded experience of the restaurant, not just have a singular bad experience to comment upon. I've worked at a number of restaurants that he's reviewed and, although the reviews aren't always positive, they're always fair.

I think Jeff simply had a good play on words - "Conched Out" - and ran with it. Apalling that a review like this directed to an advertiser would even get by an editor!!!

I've never been to Conch, but upon reading the review, I never will. Not all seafood restaurants are of real quality, especially when they first start up, there are labor pains that must be addressed for the expectant father.

We stopped in on mother's day for a late lunch...as someone who works in the industry, the first thing that disappointed me was the fact that we were seated right next to the server station when all the lovely tables by the windows sat empty. I understand only having two servers on the floor, but why wouldn't you make their sections the better seats in the house?

I have never been to Conch so I cannot comment on the food. However, to suggest that the City Paper should give a good review simply because Conch advertises in the paper is ridiculous.
