Our government has done a lot, good and bad, to and in Haiti. The issue, of course, is that our government had no business having anything to do with Haiti (beyond diplomatic relations) in the first place. But blaming the U.S. for all of Haiti's woes is ridiculous. We're not "keeping them poor" to exploit their labor; what Haitian labor is used by U.S. companies? Aristide was elected, but he was nearly as corrupt and brutal as his predecessors. No matter. Haiti simply needs to be allowed to stand or fall on its own, without the IMF, World Bank, or U.S. As has been pointed out previously, we can't afford to help ourselves, much less Haiti. As for guilt over Haiti's situation: No, I don't feel any whatsoever. We are talking about a nation where RAPE was legal until 2005. Haiti has been broken for a long, long time.

Very illuminating, Mr. Moredock.
They didn't look like your America, yet there they were. Perhaps you are incapable of seeing all of us as Americans. Because we don't agree with your progressive national suicide pact, we are both "not as smart" or "real Americans".
I'm glad to see that you had fun, though. It must have been a nice break from the "real world" of self loathing, negative, conservative bashing that you live in.

as a former manager and waiter 10% is better than nothing. This whining is an example of a server who 1. thinks that showing up is a reason to get paid. 2. doesn't see customer service as an important asset. 3. {most important} blames her customers for her inablility to manage her money. In my current business I have heard about "crappy tippers" from bartenders and waitstaff both on duty and who were off work and also complaining about not being able to pay their bills. In most cases they blew their tip money on drinks or drugs and " forgot to put away money for the bills". learn to manage your money and quit blaming others to mask your own shortcomings. Yes i have seen food replated after a spill and have seen staff spit on food. This is a right to fire state and i have fired people for this!! it is not an urban legend it happens. I have also seen servers pad a bill and short the till. so alex didn't tip well how many others did you serve during that time and how many did you bitch to about alex. your attitude needs improvement and i for one tip based on the service. best service i ever got is in waffle house. TAKE SOME LESSONS YOU NEED IT

I wouldn't say he should be beaten. I would be content for him to be ignored and refused to be seated the next time he pops into a sit-down restaurant. If he really thinks it's the job of the employer to pay a server 100% of his/her salary, he should move to Europe. The service will positively suck and you'll be begging for your glass to be refilled, but you'll get what you pay for.

I was stationed in Germany at one time, and whenever I went to a restaurant I would always, always leave a tip in keeping with my American ways. I knew it wasn't considered customary over there, but I did it anyway. I visited the same places, and at first a new server would give me the same disinterested service they gave everyone, but after seeing me a few times they'd always brighten up, SMILE, and make sure I was taken care of.

Point taken: no matter how much a server gets paid, they always appreciate customers who appreciate them in return. So grow up and stop being a jackass.

Yeah, why should I waste my money paying what I don't have to? I don't tip unless the waitress goes above and beyond the job description, which rarely happens. Bringing me my food is your job. Why should I pay you extra for doing what you already have to? And before you say, "I only make three dollars an hour and I'm a student", I'll say: I was a student once too, and I know what it's like to have to pay for school. In fact, I'm smart enough to know that if I'm working a job that only pays three dollars an hour, I'll quit and get a better job. It's not my problem that you only get paid three dollars an hour, and I'm certainly not going to give you any of my hard-earned money to make up for your boss not paying you enough.

Daily Kos didn't conduct the survey; a non-partisan independent pollster, Research 2000, did. And while I question the efficacy of the poll, its results are nonetheless revealing---and frightening.

The author of the Kos article makes a valid analogy: the ultimate goal of both Islam and fundamentalist Christianity is to convert the world. The intertwining of government and religion is a key characteristic of fascist governments. At what point does allowing one's religion to inform one's politics become government-sponsored proselytizing or theocracy?

Nazi Germany was born out of an economic depression combined with a populist movement headed by a single charismatic personality. So I don't think it is over the top to compare that period of history with what is going on today with the current recession, the Tea Party and Sarah Palin. The poll re-enforces what I've feared all along was the true mindset of GOPers.
