You may have thought Stella Nova was just for her, but even dudes can enjoy the salon/spa's offerings. Stella Nova is hosting Just for Him, a free men's appreciation night, on Mon., Nov. 23 from 6-8 p.m. By the sounds of it, the salons will turn into man caves offering head, neck, and shoulder massages, scalp treatments, neck trims, brow waxing, and hand massages. Additionally, each store will have unique offerings, so you can even jump from store to store.

The downtown location will have food from Tacone, beer from King Street Grille, and fashion guides from Oops Clothing. Mt. Pleasant will have a golf clinic and raffle, while West Ashley will have a local doctor on hand giving basic health screenings. Other goodies to look forward to are complimentary cigars and instructions on how to achieve that perfect bow-tie and shave.

Attendees can even make it home before kick off, as Stella Nova made sure not to conflict with anyone's NFL obsession. Food and drinks will be on hand from local restaurants at all locations along with a wealth of giveaways. Just for Him will take place at the Downtown, Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, and Summerville locations.

After winning the Charleston Fashion Week 2009 Emerging Designer Competition, Marysia hasn't slowed down a bit. Selections from her swim line have been picked up by Urban Outfitters, and Anthropology might be on the way, too.

Following CFW, Marysia headed to Miami for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim where her pieces were eyed by numerous other companies like Victoria's Secret, Sports Illustrated (for their swimsuit issue), and Teen Vogue.

PR representative Jackie Tyler reports that while the Mercedes Fashion Week was tough, it was worth it. "It was a huge undertaking, but it's paid off," Tyler says. "It's really just been overwhelming."

In preparation of her spring 2010 Urban Outfitters debut, Marysia has temporarily moved out to Los Angeles to oversee the production of her swimwear. Despite the increase in production, she's committed to keeping her product in the U.S. and the quality sound. She uses a high-end fabric made in Italy that is environmentally friendly.

Pearl will host a Goods of Conscience trunk show on Thurs. Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at their Shem Creek store. The men's, women's, and accessories line is the brainchild of Father Andrew O'Connor after a 2005 trip to Guatemala. O'Connor witnessed the extreme poverty of the people and sought to create a fair economic model that would also preserve the traditional Mayan backstrap weaving.

The organic Guatemalan clothing, which has received raves from Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, features women's shorts, jackets, dresses, and skirts, men's blazers, shirts, and pants, bags, scarves, hats, ties, and more. The line also has a variety of home goods ranging from placemats to Christmas ornaments. O'Connor will be speaking about his line at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. and urges you to "choose to wear the social fabric." For more information, call Pearl at (843) 654-1014.

Fashion-lovin' folks have not one, but three vintage trunk shows to choose from this week.

On Wednesday, Library: Archives of Fashion, Jane Pope Jewelry, and Balboa Jewelry are hosting a trunk show at 105-B Rutledge Ave., at the corner or Rutledge and Bull streets. In addition to one-of-a-kind finds, there will be yummy bites from Elizabeth Allen to munch on while you browse. In anticipation of the coming holiday season, the show will also feature a special gift wrap station.

Then on Friday and Saturday, local fashion maven Lori Wyatt is set to host another vintage trunk show from 5-10 p.m. at the Real Estate Studio (214 King St.) In addition to perusing a variety of '50s and '60s vintage wear, attendees can sip on champagne at the cocktail reception.

We also just got word of a trunk show going on at Pearl today through Saturday (Nov. 5-7). You'll find vintage jewelry from the Carole Tanenbaum vintage collection, as well as the Megan Park 2010 spring/summer collection. Call (843) 654-1014 for more info.

Goga, Project Runway contestant Gordana Gehlhausen's King Street store, is closing. Manager Ruggie Ridgeway cites the downturn of the economy and Gehlhausen's focus on her flagship San Diego store as reasons for the shuttering. Before the rumor mill starts spinning, Ridgeway wanted to state that the closing has nothing to do with the Project Runway results.

Bad news for King Street, however, is good news for local fashionistas. All clothing items will be 50 percent off and the store is selling everything down to the mannequins. Hurry to Goga while the deals last. The store is located at 377 King Street just below Calhoun. Call (843) 722-3774 for more info.

Update: A new shipment recently came into the store, and they're staying open through November to try to clear everything out. Everything is still 50 percent off!

Wink, one of our favorite little boutiques in the Avondale community (and in Charleston, for that matter), is celebrating its one year anniversary this Thurs. Oct. 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. Like any good party, this one will include good sales, beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres. But here’s the impressive part: all profits from the evening will be donated to Camp Happy Days. Owner Errica Watkins has close ties to the organization, as both of her children have battled cancer. “Celebrate life and health and share your kindness and love for a truly worthy cause,” Errica says.
Upper King Street’s eclectic factor will go up quite a bit with next week’s opening of Seeking Indigo in the old Putumayo space at 445 King. Kathryn Peters, Blake Kingsbury, and Misty Dahl have created an Eastern-Western philosophy-style super-store that incorporates a retail space, a wellness center, pilates center, and cafe.

The mind-body-spirit idea sprang from the owners’ travels in Indonesia, India, Morocco, Peru, the Pacific Islands, and more. They bring these countries' cultures to King Street with an uplifting lifestyle and holistic wellness approach to shopping.

Not only will fashionistas be satisfied, with designers offering bamboo yoga clothing, couture Indigo dyed tunics and scarves, goddess-inspired gowns, and Bohemian style resort wear, but so will others looking to better their bodies. Seeking Indigo features the Loft Pilates Center, a hyperbonic oxygen chamber, massages, and a “grab and go” cafe featuring raw and organic foods and juices from Sprout.

Other novel options for sale are vintage Vespas, "root art" from Bali, contemporary Eastern handicraft furniture, and Putumayo world music, all in one place.

The store’s grand opening is during the Upper King Design Walk Thurs. Oct. 15, 6-8 p.m. Mayor Joe Riley will kick off the walk with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store.

Fall has officially arrived, and even though it's still 80 degrees, now you don't have to feel so guilty shopping for boots, blazers, and other cozy goodness. Lucky for you, local businesses are also getting in on the seasonal excitement. Here’s a line-up of some events — most of them free — coming up over the next few days.

Wednesday, head to Belk in the Mt. Pleasant Towne Center for a Girl’s Night Out. Preview the latest fall trends at a fashion show, learn new makeup techniques, and enjoy chocolate refreshments, music, discounts and more. (5-8:30 p.m.)

Thursday, Pearl hosts their Opening Soiree, with music from Quentin Baxter and Gradual Lean, food from Langdon’s, and drinks from Muse. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Pet Helpers. (7 p.m.) Thursday night is also Lula Kate’s Soiree hosted by Southern Protocol. All merchandise will be 10 percent off, and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. (6-8 p.m.)

On Saturday morning, head to the parking lot by the Hampton Park Dog Park to bargain hunt at the Wagener Terrace Yard Sale. (8 a.m.-12 p.m.) Stop by Mac & Murphy in the afternoon for the Candy Shop Vintage Trunk Show. (pictured, 1-5 p.m.) Jasmine Porch at the Sanctuary hosts the Fall Fashion with Flair Luncheon from 12-2 p.m. Local stores like Eden Boheme, Cose Belle, Felice Designs, and more will have their fall wares on view, and you’ll enjoy a three-course menu with champagne ($45). Later that night, Article 5 Salon and Boutique on King Street hosts their grand opening with food and drinks. (6-9 p.m.)

Throughout the weekend, stop by the Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre for deals at the Weekend Sidewalk Sale. Also find some deals at Suite Sole, which is closing Sept. 29. (R.I.P.)

The fashion madness continues next week — Keep your eye out for the Fashion 4 Paws show on Shem Creek Oct. 1, the Dockside Fashion Show Oct. 3, the Whispers on Wentworth grand re-opening Oct. 9, and the Seeking Indigo Grand Opening Oct. 15.
Gustavo Serrano, owner of the Spring Street boutique, did not comment on the reasons for closing. If we had to guess, we'd say it's a mixture of the store's off-the-beaten-path location and a lack of clientele for the high-price street style they specialize in.

Suite Sole is having a closing sale, with T-shirts and hats on sale for 50 percent off, shoes for 30-50 percent off, and Mock Couture items 15 percent off. Stop by while the deals last.

Sandwiched between Jimmy John's and Caviar & Bananas on George Street, the House of Sage joined the ranks of Charleston's boutiques last week. The boutique features eco-friendly clothes for men and women. But don't get the wrong idea — you won't find any hemp necklaces or hippie skirts here. The selection is super-stylish, with prices ranging from a men's T-shirt for $25 to an evening dress for $220. Chic miscellaneous items like wire bowls and natural wine racks will be featured along with fun accessories from brands like Diana Warner and JJ Winters.

The store is owned and operated by Chris Abagnale, and his goal is to provide a low-pressure environment where you can relax and shop at your own pace. There's even a lounge with a couch and a flat screen TV in the back for all of you non-shoppers.

The official grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 2-4, coinciding not so coincidentally with Parents' Weekend at the College of Charleston. Students who come to the weekend-long event with their parents will receive a discount. Local art and fashion designers are slated to be on sale soon after the store's official opening.

Charleston-based designer Lindsey Carter, a finalist in the 2009 Charleston Fashion Week Emerging Designer Competition, is featured in today’s edition of Women’s Wear Daily. The article is titled “Fresh Takes: New York Designers to Watch,” and talks about her Troubadour line.

Lindsey graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She went on to work at J. Crew and Madewell before moving back to the Carolinas. Though the short article makes no mention of it, Lindsey made a strong showing at CFW with her “elegant punk” line, featuring pops of yellow and purple.

“Carter uses a bright, saturated palette on spare, simple silhouettes: easy cocktail dresses and jumpsuits. And though she plans on eventually expanding into separates, the designer is content to keep her collection frock-centric for now,” WWD writer Venessa Lau reports.

Designers, start your engines. Charleston Fashion Week 2010 is currently recruiting designers from across the Southeast for the Emerging Designer Competition.

If you’ve been living under a rock, you may be surprised that all of the 2008 Emerging Designer finalists were asked to audition for season 6 of Project Runway — Carol Hannah Whitfield actually made it onto the show, and has yet to hear “auf wiedersehen” (knock on wood). The winner of the 2009 Emerging Designer Competition Marysia Reeves has gone on to win acclaim at Fashion Week SWIM in Miami, and we hear she was recently picked up by a major retailer (details to come). So placing in this competition is no small feat.

Designers must fall into at least one of these categories: They must currently design for own label/company and have done so for less than two years, they must currently design fashions as a hobby/part-time job/on the side, and/or they must currently study fashion design. Designer must be a resident of Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. Designer must be 18 years of age or older, or have parental/guardian permission to apply.

Eight designers will be chosen as semifinalists to show their full collections on March 16. After that, three finalists will be given a design challenge and asked to create a garment(s) to present on the runway Saturday night. They will have three days to complete their challenge.

All entries are due Oct. 23.

Cynthia Rowley kicks off a monthly series of how-to events next Wed. Sept. 16. The topic for the inaugural lesson? How to rock the runway. The instructor is none other than Trixie Kawasaki, winner of the Stiletto Stampede back in March. Trixie went on to demonstrate her runway skills after the shows one night at Charleston Fashion Week.

As with any event at Cynthia Rowley, delish cocktails will be served, and guests will also enjoy an exclusive viewing of Cynthia’s Spring 2010 show straight out of Gotham Hall in NYC — the show takes place Sept. 11, and the DVD will be overnighted for Charleston guests to enjoy before anyone else.

Store manager Kate Stewart says they’re currently brainstorming the next events in the series, but they may include how to distress your own jeans, create a cheap-but-chic flower arrangements, and how to tie-dye. Best of all, they’re all either free, like Wednesday’s event, or very cheap.

While you’re there, check out the store’s sales on summer clothes, as well as their new fall merchandise. The hottest pieces this season include cocktail dresses (hot pink!), studded tights, and a tutu dress.

Space is limited for this event, so register soon by calling (843) 577-8013.

If you’ve got a sweet spot for holistic massage, smooth skin, and perhaps a stylish accessory or two, then here’s a sweet spot for you: Sweet 185, Charleston’s own body sugaring and massage studio and organic boutique. Their specialty is body sugaring, which is a healthy and environmentally-friendly alternative to the painful experience of waxing. The paste they use, made of sugar, water, and lemon, is applied by hand and gently removes hair and dead skin cells. They’ve also got a full menu of massage packages, fashionable and comfy clothing and accessories, and a lot of skin care products, too.

Sweet 185 recently relocated from their Cannon Street digs to the Upper King Design District. To celebrate, they’re throwing a grand re-opening party on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 4-8 p.m. They’ll have treats, giveaways, demonstrations, tours, and more. The new pad is located at 476 King St. and they’ll even validate your parking (don’t forget the ticket stub) if you park in the Visitors Center Garage at 63 Mary St., right behind the studio.
