My biggest complaint about HOA life is that most of them do very vague outlines and it leaves you wondering if someday they are going to tell you everyone must have white curtains etc. I like the inside of my home to look the way I want to look. Some of the associations even perform inhome inspections and I find that absolutely ridiculous. I can understand people not wanting a neighbor to have a fushia colored house etc but to have a problem with solar panels installed on a roof or saying black curtains are unacceptable and every home needs to be the same carbon copy I just don't get it. I think one of my fondest memories of a neighborhood was one where all the homes were victorian style and very different I used to drive by just to look at all the neat houses they were all so full of character.
I agree with the previous poster however rules and guidelines should be set not just changed when a few people decide that something is "distasteful" because they want everything to look the same. Your neighbor having blue or black or rust colored curtains is most certainly not going to devalue property let's be realistic here and all of the HOA places I have resided so far had a bunch of people that just wanted to single out other people and stick their noses where it doesn't belong. I don't even think many times it's even about what they are complaining about I think it's that they just want to complain period.
