As an African american and in Charleston I can tell you that separation between the races is a very bad thing. People tend to gravitate toward what their used to. So it is not strange that they would separate themselves. Blacks and whites still don't wholely understand each other, some even make the mistake of deriving their "truths" about the other from television instead of personal experience. It took four years to convince my wife that most whites weren't rich and a little longer to convince some people I've met here that all blacks have been or are in a gang or sell drugs. Things that are different scare most people. But hopefully one day we will move passed it and on to better things.
