A big fact that many are overlooking: The amount that the state contributes to the public colleges is shrinking every year. The majority of the budgets from these schools come from sources other than the state. So, chances are, the money that was spent on these books did NOT come from the state.
Aside from the obvious fact that the state lawmakers jobs are simply to fund the schools and NOT make policy for the schools (that is what the boards and bureaucracy of the respective schools are for), and absolutely NOT to claim to be experts on what is academically appropriate. They need to butt out.
When they contribute more than a small percentage of the budget, then get back to me about what right they have to give input on that.
