It seems DHEC is trying to make sure birth centers are safe places to give birth, I agree with and commend them for this. However, they need to listen to Lesley Rathbun, CNM and owner of the Charleston Birth Center. The CBP does provide a safe place to give birth and they have an excellent relationship with collaborating physicians at Trident Medical Center and can promptly transfer patients there if needed without a hold-up or an issue. The physicians strongly support CBP and are available 24/7 for consultation and transfer. CBP needs to stay open as it is a very safe place for low-risk mothers to give birth.
I am a RN who works at both a local hospital and Charleston Birth Place (CBP) and I can definitely say CBP is a safe place for low-risk mothers to give birth. The midwives at CBP are so knowledgable and take excellent, competent care of the mothers and babies at CBP. I will choose to give birth at CBP someday and I am urging DHEC to keep the CBP open. The regulation needs to be changed, not the CBP.
