I think the solution is to use Union Pier for what it was intended for and that is cargo. Now if you believe for one minute that the residents of downtown Charleston would welcome cargo ships at Union Pier and be any happier then I have some swamp land to sell you. The fact is these people won't ever be happy until Union Pier is developed with well appointed condominiums and stately walking parks that will not impede their views of the harbor and provide them a place to walk fido. Who are we kidding. These people are all elitist and have an expectation of what's best for the city as pertains to them!
There will always be men that rape just as there will always be those that murder, rob or assault. Blaming the victims of any of these crimes makes no sense and is certainly not right. Knowing this, common sense dictates that the best defense against any crime including rape is common sense itself. In a perfect world a person should have the right to walk where they want, at any time they want, in any condition they want, dressed however they want. Unfortunately, we do not live in that type of world and being cognitive of our surroundings and the people that surround us is the best defense. That is hard to do if someone is impaired or lacks common sense and while that gives no one the right to commit a crime against that person sadly it is going to happen.
As is often the case, the democrats cite and believe the government is the only acceptable source for helping the poor, the elderly, and of course African-Americans. What is amazing is the fact that before the federal government got in to the social welfare programs business it was the Church that assisted and helped the above groups of people. As our country has hurtled down the path to secularism, people do not want assistance from the Church for fear there may be an expectation of righteous living. In other words people would rather starve that accept help from the Church and possibly feel guilty for the way they live their lives or to be held accountable for their actions. It all makes sense to the democrats to believe that republicans are against government social welfare and are all religious zealots because quite honestly that's what people choose to believe.
