I don't believe slavery would have lasted much longer as many land were coming to realize it was not economically viable, I believe the evolution of society would have been far less volatile as well as in England slavery was becoming less and less popular, and even though people like Alexander Stephens had stated that blacks were a lower class of people, privately he was against slavery, also General's like Stonewall Jackson were also opposed to it as well.
