How much of that 360,000 gallons being pumped into the Ashley is treated and or sewage from our streets. I bet with in a year of completion that the Ashley will be as polluted as the cooper... The sixth most polluted river in America. It's sad that we still use a medival system for drainage in our fair city.
This is fantastic journalism.
Thank you for laying out facts and ideas on all sides of the situation. added trash pickup, water stations, and if need be a clear bus route on Arctic. I'm a taxi driver and picked up twice at 10th. Everything was sort of under control. Two blue shirted officers were making sure people were of the road. Trash sorta confined to canisters. There was a bus parked, with the other lane open for regular one-way traffic. If people we acting up the blue safety guy would handle the situation. At that point no big, just a bunch of good looking people trying to get off and out of Folly. After about ten minutes of weak cell phone reception(overloaded lines/network) i found my first group and we where off. Side note: I had to pull through intersection of 10th and arctic to idle while i waited on the right side in a driveway. Fenced transportation line would have helped!!!
4:00pm Folly Bridge nightmare
On my way out of Folly I was the sixth vehicle behind a car pile up on the folly beach at around 4:00pm. That absolute was the nail in the coffin as far as traffic goes. Wreck involved three cars including a folly beach officer. I believe that the officer was okay but the car was rear-ended and smashed on both ends. Poeple where getting up and out of there cars looking at the damage.
When I finally cleared the wreck, dropped downtown, and made it back to my next now late pickup at folly(2hr delay) the scene at 10th block looked the same. Beachgoers walking over the stairs trying to break the heat and find some shade which was walk up 10th towards hudson st. About twenty to thirty people milling around the intersection. The officers where there corralling everybody and it seemed like most people where just looking to get the hell out of there.
Folly beach has one way in and one way out! Traffic is the lifeblood and it was blocked. Every lane of road was in gridlock. My passengers where great and the ride was a little ridiculous at times because they were hammered and the windows come down and then somebody opens the door walks to Tokyo creps.... so maybe some public safety officers helping on the side streets would help enforce noise and general loudness/liter. Have set times for clean up. (if you need a company hire these guys: http://www.eventbrite.com
Not everybody respects our beaches and because we are the few that do care, lets plan to make mass influxes of people work the community.
Reverse traffic lanes for major congestion issues during peak time. Look to europe for answers!
