Women are certainly a minority in SC politics, they represent only 5% of elected positions in Charleston and less than 20% in the state.

Had Catherine not run openly as a lesbian it may have been said that she were 'covering it up' and ... it's hard to hide the fact that she's female. By running as an openly gay woman she's, in a sense, saying "yep, I'm a gay woman, I'm running for office, why should that matter?". She will win despite being gay not because she is gay. It will be because Catherine IS qualified that she, as a double minority, will be elected.
