Just as Cathy is entitled to espouse his opinion, unenlightened as it may be, the LGBT community has the same right to boycott his restaurant. If the CEO of Apple advocated atheism and denounced the Bible as a collection of fables written to scare the bejeezus out of common folk in order to control them, there would be a lot fewer Iphone owners.
In 1920, Hitler became a member of the National Socialist German Workers Party. He rabidly denounced democracy because he believed that the Jews used it for self-preservation.
Duffy, SCOTUS does not operate, at least theoretically, along party lines which is the reason they are given lifetime appointments by the constitution. They are beholding to no one but their consciences and the rule of law.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act was passed by Congress in 1986 as part of COBRA and signed into law by Ronald Reagan. It provides that all hospitals which accept Medicare, Medicaid and other government reimbursements (nearly all hospitals) must extend medical care to everyone regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. As a result of this law, health insurance premiums soared for those who chose to contribute to their own health care and medical costs rose exponentially as hospitals charged $10.00 for an aspirin in an attempt to offset enormous unpaid medical care they were forced by law to provide to the uninsured. This law forced the haves to pay for have nots.
President Obama's Health Care Reform Act imposes a penalty on those who choose to remain uninsured and pass along their health care costs to the rest of us. Yet half the country perceives the Obama law as socialistic? Unbelievable!
The Republicans in Congress now say they will try to repeal Obama's law yet they have nothing to replace it with which means if the repeal is successful we will continue to pay for those who use Reagan's law to burden the insured with their medical care.
I urge all conservatives to think independently and carefully consider what your so-called leaders are advocating. Our government is dysfunctional, incredibly partisan and broken, possibly beyond repair. Most politicians will say anything, no matter how outrageous, to protect their power and reelection. Are you going to believe their sound bytes or the facts?
We Americans have always pulled together during the worst of times and I remain hopeful that we can continue that tradition even as our politicians savage one another to the detriment of our government as well as the survival of our democracy.
Every group has its share of bigots. Some more than others.
