I loved this film. I've read good and bad reviews. Mr. Weeks's is one of the worst reviews I've read because he pays very little attention to the movie. The editing may be rough at times, but the film was made on a shoestring budget. This movie will never be a main stream blockbuster because it does not follow the linear narrative that leads to a happy ending formula that is required for those who find it difficult to tear themselves away from The Voice and American Idol. I spend a lot of time in Louisiana and these filmmakers captured the Gulf better than any other film I can recall.
It takes some guts to speak an opinion against the mainstream in South Carolina, and you have always had the gumption to do so. Good luck in your future endeavors and I will miss reading your column in City Paper.
I truly enjoy the way that this column upsets "conservatives".
Bush was absolutely correct to go into Afghanistan to blow apart the terrorist network in Afghanistan. Clinton was right before him to try to lead the country into destroying the growing terrorist network that was taking root there (and was ridiculed for it. Remember "wag the dog". All the Newt led Republicans wanted to concentrate on at that time was Bill Clinton's penis.) We have basically accomplished the mission that we can accomplish. What we can not do is turn any of these places into what they are not. They will never be freedom loving democracies who are eternally grateful to the United States. We've tried too long to make George Bush look right. As for Rush, I think he's a closet liberal (no kidding).
I am a semi-retired high school teacher with thirty-five years experience and through the years I have seen my colleagues fired for momentary lapses of judgement. I am a left leaning democrat who keeps my own political views out of the classroom. I have a sense of humor and have pushed the limits of "appropriateness" in my classroom conversations, especially with older students. I have infrequently been called on the carpet in the principal's office for doing so. I can't believe any dumbass would show this to his classes in a public school and not expect to get in trouble for it.
