Great review - accurate - wonderfully funny show with lush costumes and beautifully choreographed set changes.
Great show - tons of fun and really well done!
City Paper needs to make new categories that celebrate local live theatre and actors that work on those stages. People vote for name recognition because most of Charleston doesn't go to the local theatres. And they vote for Bill Murray and Catherine Bell because they are famous film and tv actors who have a connection to Charleston but don't do a thing for the local theatre scene.
The same thing is true about the best non-Spoleto play. You allow a Broadway touring company musical to win this category when it isn't any more "local" than a Spoleto play. Actually it's less local because some Spoleto productions actually have their sets built here. It isn't fair to include a Broadway touring production in a local contest. It's ridiculous - who can possibly compete with that on the budgets that local theatre companies have to survive on?
Our local theatre community works their collective derrieres off doing shows for free or practically nothing and rarely, if ever, get recognition for the fantastic job they do entertaining.
The same thing is true for the best musician category. Darius Rucker isn't really part of the local music scene anymore. But there are bands that work day in and day out entertaining in local venues who don't get recognized.
City Paper really needs to do an overhaul of the "Best Of" categories so that it isn't a sham like it is every single year.
Doubly sadly ironic is that the life of a bartender who is killed by a drunk driver is celebrated by going out and consuming a bottle of Grand Ma. There is something askew with this picture.
Somehow the disclaimers at the PURE website of bad language, blasphemy, violence, and PG13, which really should be an R rating for a "Christmas" show is repellent...really repellent.
