As the former state chair of the NC League of the South, and the person who invited Tara Servatius to speak at our meeting, I'd like the opportunity to respond.
The characterization of the League as a "white supremacist" organization ignores who we really are and what we stand for. Murray Rothbard, who was Jewish, was a charter member. We have black and Hispanic members. Yes, we oppose the Wall Street Journal's agenda of open borders, knowing that big business has an insatiable appetite for cheap, exploitable labor. Those who are concerned about the middle class should oppose the deterioration of wages resulting from the importation of more labor during a time of record unemployment.
As for secession - the central government in DC is too big, too powerful, and permanently wedded to a murderous policy of endless war. As Robert E. Lee predicted in a letter to Lord Acton, DC has become aggressive abroad and despotic at home. We are being ruined by DC's reckless spending and insane foreign policy. Breaking up this empire into smaller, human-scaled units is the only way to tame this beast. Events in the former Soviet Union, as well as today in Catalonia and Scotland, suggest the era of the all-powerful megastate is quickly dying.
Tara's talk to our group in 2001, by the way, was about her efforts to counter media bias. There are often other points of view that are ignored by the "mainstream" media.
In January, 2010, I resolved to reduce my waist from a size 40 to a 36 over the course of a year. After six months of ramping up my exercise regimen (free weights, running, tennis, punching bag) and starving myself, I'd lost 4 lbs and my waist stubbornly bulged out at 39 inches. Then I read about the paleo diet and decided to try it.
Like Jack, I'm not a purist - I still enjoy an occasional pizza, beer, and pasta. But by eliminating cereals, biscuits, pancakes, and bagels for breakfast, as well as sandwiches and desserts for lunch and supper, I met my goal by December, 2010. A year later, I'm a size 34, and have never felt better. The best news is you don't have to go hungry! You can enjoy all the meat, tree-borne nuts, and most veggies you can eat. That's my kind of diet.
What does this have to do with conservatism? It's a matter of ditching the theories and getting back to basic human needs as defined by our history.
How typical of these pro-war, any war types to sound tough at convenient distances.
You should consider that jerk's slam as a badge of honor.
