As a server in Charleston, I'd say people are fairly generous with tips. Sure plenty of jerks stiff me or leave me 10%, but there are lots of generous customers out there as well. As someone above said, however, servers make less than $3 an hour. We work for tips which means that if you sit at my table for an hour with your friends and tip me 10% or nothing at all that means I don't make any money that hour. Unless you receive bad service and the server doesn't try to fix the problem after you tell him about it, you don't really have any excuse for tipping less than 15-20%. If you can't afford it, stay home. Don't be a jerk.
