I live in Charlotte but have a house in Charleston, so I travel here about once a month, and everytime I'm in Charleston, I would go the Variety Store at least once. The food is consistently good (especially the she crab soup!), the atmosphere is relaxing, and the staff is friendly, although the service sometimes can be a bit slow, but when I'm there, it's usually for breakfast or lunch on the weekend, so I don't mind that at all. This is definitely the place where the locals eat, and it has been around for 40+ years.
