Re: “Cherny runs for Congress again, upgrades to Democrat

Dimitri Cherny is a thoughtful and intelligent man. He's also a great listener, and if you challenge him on a point of politics, rather than argue with you, he'll try to find common ground.

I worked with Dimitri on his last campaign when the City of Charleston confiscated most of the yard signs we placed on highway ramps and at intersections (an expensive lesson well learned).

I believe in Dimitri but more than that : Dimitri is no fly-by-night kook. He is educated and fully capable of doing the job that the office demands. The People of South Carolina have given Mark Sanford more than his share of slack, given his performance. This time, we have a real alternative.

Re: “Protesters threaten to shut down Ravenel Bridge toward Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m.

Frustrated and angry? Good.

Try and appreciate how Charleston people of color feel at being treated like second class citizens by the police and by the press. Last week, a man was shot dead for the capital crime of having a busted taillight. Imagine every time you're pulled over having to worry, not about getting a ticket, but whether you'll survive the encounter.

These protests are not about the execution of Walter Scott by a rogue cop, although that was the focus. They're about a systemic problem in the way that we Americans treat each other. They're about the continued brutalization of a people whose only 'crime' is their skin color.

Re: “Why aren’t the Dems putting up a candidate against Mark Sanford?

In case you haven't met Dimitri Cherny, he's been all over the lowcountry lately, shaking hands and talking about putting capitalism to work for ALL of us. Dimitry is a thoughtful, practical man, a son of immigrants, who works a full time job and has still managed to put in many, many hours campaigning over the past few weeks. He's garnered endorsements from the Charleston Green Party and Thomas Dixon's Coalition among others.

Dimitri's running as a write in candidate. He lacks the big checkbook of the Republicans; but he would bring one thing to this office that the GOP can't ... character. Please check out his website.

Re: “Hear from the protesters who blocked the Crosstown for an hour

I'm amazed at the lack of consideration some folks have for these hard working people. If they get $15/hour it will not diminish me in the least. It might diminish McDonald's, but I strongly doubt they will raise prices. They might have to cut dividends (boo-hoo) or cut the salaries of their parasitic executives. But there is a lot of competition for my food dollar locally.

On the other hand, paying their employees more means that more money stays in the community, rather than going to people far away. The employees won't have to supplement their incomes with public assistance, meaning that it's McDonald's, and not the taxpayer who is paying their salaries.

The folks who work in these restaurants are my friends and neighbors. Why should I not want them to prosper? I can only assume that the posters above are so mean-spirited that they must have someone to look down on. It lets them avoid looking at their own sad lives.

Re: “When it comes to 'Fun Home,' Leon Stavrinakis tries to have it both ways

Leon Stavrinakis, as well as Robert Ford both made public statements last month in support of Glen McConnell. This was before #fightforcofc began getting some traction. When it became apparent that they were making headway, he suddenly decided to be a Democrat again. The SC Green party came out with a strong statement in support of #fightforcofc around the same time but it got lost in the perpetual grind of Democratic waffling.

If the fight for CofC has shown us anything, it's that the SC legislature is a corrupt political whorehouse full of bullies and cowards. They would rather make war against a bunch of college kids than attempt to do what those same college kids are doing -- change things for the better. Well, it seems that those kids were not such an easy target after all, eh?
