After five generations of farming both land and sea, the Doran family is carrying on tradition with St. Jude Farms, which operates a sustainable aquaculture initiative. The operation is family-owned and family members sit on the board to ensure a continued advocacy for conservation rights. St. Jude Farms produces high-quality seafood for wholesale, and after an extensive three-year process, they’ve secured permits to grow up to 750,000 oysters, many of which are sold to restaurants. Their Otter Island Wild has gained a certain amount of fame at the Ordinary downtown. The mission at St. Jude Farms is to place an emphasis on high quality, sustainable aquaculture, and local sourcing whenever possible. The good news is that as of Sept. 3 they’ll have their wild oysters available. This fall they will have their regular Otter Island Wild oysters, deep water scallops, and sweetgrass mussels. Their location in the ACE Basin gives them access to the pristine waters of Fish Creek where they purge their seafood, keeping it alive until the minute it’s sold.
