Kindness thrives in Sweetgrass Garden, which donates 95 percent of the food produced and won the 2012 Conservationist of the Year award for the Charleston region. Dale Snyder began farming with “just a well, a pump, some seeds” and the desire to do something meaningful that helps others and contributes to our ecosystem and local foodshed. His goals have come to fruition through this volunteer-based farm, which sends its produce to Lowcountry Food Bank, Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach, Crisis Ministries, and the Hebron Mt. Zion Church Emergency Food Pantry. Beehives, blueberries, grapefruit trees, and asparagus are among the latest long-term additions to the garden. This year, Sweetgrass Garden will expand its grant-funded fish compost research to include a few more crops. A great place to connect with people devoted to a good cause and learn about responsible farming methods, Sweetgrass encourages individuals and groups to come out on Saturdays (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) to volunteer. Bring a hat, sunblock, gloves, and sturdy shoes.
