Roger Spateholts runs Bonneau Pepper Farm as a one-man operation. He grows natural, hydroponic, pesticide-free hot peppers of any variety. This season, he's working with red lantern peppers and Romanian peppers, but specializes in habañeros. There are 300 pepper plants on his premises, and Whole Foods buys virtually all of his habañeros. You can find them in the grocery store's produce section marked by Certified South Carolina Grower stickers. In addition, Spateholts harvests heirloom tomatoes — Eva Purples — and seedless Diva cucumbers. Throughout the growing season, his wife Amy cans avidly, turning excess cucumbers into bread and butter pickles, dill pickles, hot pickles, and preserved tomatoes to eat during the winter. Be on the lookout for Spateholts at farmer's markets in Summerville and Moncks Corner. Contact him if you're interested in contract growing. He encourages chefs to hand-select crops for him to hydroponically grow.
