Next to the dry dock marina on the periphery of Shem Creek’s residential area is Magwood Shrimp — always has been, always will be. Wayne Magwood and his dutiful ship, the Winds of Fortune, gained fame when they were featured on the Discovery Channel series Dirty Jobs. Magwood’s company has served loyal customers with heads-on and heads-off shrimp for more than 40 years. Arrive at the Magwood dock with an empty cooler ready to be filled. Magwood uses no chemicals to preserve their shrimp, and they sell out almost every day, a guaranteed sign of freshness. Shrimp boats usually unload between 1 and 4 p.m., but sometimes they arrive as late as midnight. Magwood doesn’t supply many restaurants, although Art’s Bar & Grill and Finz cook with his shrimp. Magwood also takes customers on his boat to offer them a good look at the life of a shrimper.
