Bubba Rector owns Geechie Seafood with his wife Pam and has been shrimping since the 1970s. Go to the Shem Creek dock next to Cottage on the Creek midday, and you might get to watch Bubba and his shirtless crew (during the summer, at least) unload Geechie’s boat, the Warren H. Rector. The strikers dock and unload on the back deck, tossing shrimp to flocks of pelicans as they work. The shrimp are washed, sorted to size, headed, iced, packaged to order, and sold no farther than five feet from the heading table. After the haul, Rector and his sons and grandson, fellow shrimpers, and friends kill time, basking on the dock at the Geechie Seafood hut after hours during shrimping season (March through December). They are currently waiting on white shrimp to come in for the fall season.
