Mike and Becky Whorrel produce some of the best eating in South Carolina. Not just because their farm outside of Barnwell allows cattle to graze on premium perennial peanut hay, but also because Mike is a retired Clemson professor with a specialty in bovine nutrition. His custom feed ratio of crabgrass, soybean hulls, and other quality forages allows some of his cows to grade as prime beef, without the use of corn. It’s a unique product, with a unique flavor, and one that you can enjoy year-round if you buy carcass halves direct from the farm. Mike has them custom butchered and aged to your specifications, which results in a freezer full of very tasty beef, but if 600 pounds of meat is not your bag, you can order online or head out to the Ocean Room at the Sanctuary on Kiawah, where they’ve occasionally featured a gargantuan Mibek rib-eye for north of $150 a pop.
