In 2009, husband-and-wife team Michael and Ailyn Milligan began an operation to provide Charleston with free-range chicken. They sell whole broilers, breasts, thighs, eggs, and gizzards at their farmers market stand in Marion Square on Saturdays. Sugar Bakeshop uses eggs from Chucktown to make their cookies and cakes. At the farm, floorless bird cages (a.k.a. chicken tractors) are moved daily. The chickens eat a complex feed of corn, soybean, oat, fish meal, kelp meal, oyster shell, and Brewer's yeast. The Milligans have plans to relocate their farm to a piece of property in Jamestown later next year. Fans of Chucktown can look forward to an expanded selection of "real as possible" products — goat cheese, milk, and meat, as well as beef and honey — after the move. —Alison Sher
