You won't find a family more dedicated to their way of life (and more willing to fight to maintain it) than the Legares on Johns Island. In operation since 1725, Legare is run by siblings Thomas, Linda, and Helen, the ninth generation of farmers on their 375-acre plot. The Legares are able to continue farming by creatively attracting visitors. From hayrides to horse rides to corn mazes and pumpkin patches, this is the farm for family fun. You can even build your own scarecrow after visiting with the sheep, goats, rabbits, cows, and chickens. The Legares operate one of the oldest CSAs in Charleston, with plenty of tomatoes and collards to satisfy your appetite for Southern cooking. Their spring CSA still has spots open and will include potatoes, onions, beets, turnips, kale, and broccoli, just to name a few. They sell antibiotic- and hormone-free chickens, eggs, pork, and beef along with sod and fruit trees. They use sustainable practices, feeding day-old bread and leftover grains from the local breweries to their pigs and cattle. They have a Butcher's Club CSA that allows members to buy shares ranging from $250-$1,000 and pick up meat in installments throughout the year.
