Along with some talented visiting guest performers, some of Charleston’s finest visual and musical artists will gather in Marion Square this Friday afternoon for a event aimed at bringing attention and showing support to those who are homeless or at risk of losing a home. The Humanities Foundation is “sending out a mayday call for help” to paint the House of Hope at 3:30 p.m. on Fri. May 1 at Marion Square. It hopes to raise funds for the foundation’s ShelterNet program as well. Jazz drummer and bandleader Quentin Baxter (pictured) and his combo will set up on the King Street side of the park. The House of Hope will be behind the fountain at the corner of King and Calhoun streets. Artists John Pundt and Charlie McAlister will be on hand, as will Guerrilla Cuisine’s jimihatt. “We want to engage young people in the issue of homelessness because they are the future of that issue, and they can bring about change,” says Tracy Doran, president of the Humanities Foundation. “We are getting more referrals from people who need assistance for rent and utilities. Although some people aren’t in homeless shelters, they are having trouble month to month. They are living with friends and family, which means they are going through their support system. It could be just a matter of time before they fall through the cracks and end up in the homeless shelters.” Since 1992, the Humanities Foundation has been a leader in addressing the affordable housing crisis throughout the Lowcountry. —T.
