Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

I believe Charleston is a beautiful lovely city rich in history and traditions. I love the cobblestone streets and the smell from the various restaurants throughout the city. People are polite and receptive to a greeting. College students gather on streets and talk. Friends walk down King Street shopping and drinking their Starbucks. Families walk downtown on Second Sunday walking their dogs and eating Popsicles from King of Pops. The farmers market breathes fun, fresh, and local. So, friendly, yes.

Whether or not Charleston is inclusive or exclusive is another question. Whether or not Charleston is kind and forgiving is another question. Whether or not Charleston is morphing into a more commercial city is another question. Whether or not Charleston is genuine or not is another question. Whether or not Charleston is healthy or not is another question.

We can always work harder to make our city better. For both those who live and work here and for those who visit.

This place is horrid. People will come to see that and the housing bubble will pop. Who knows the fate of this overcrowded, over-talked swamp after that. What happens when the rich flee?

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

I'm from CT as well & totally agree with Erin. I was floored early on when a black woman held open a door for me & greeted me good morning!

I was quite upset when I first read this article. I attacked the author personally, which I apologize for.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

Quite the bitter article. We moved here from CT. If you wanna REALLY see unfriendly, visit there. Charleston (Mount Pleasant areas), are very friendly, no place is a perfect uptopia, but coming from the Northeast, NYC regions... People don't even make eye contact there and the cashiers don't even look at you, let alone say hello. Since we have arrived in SC, we have had conversations in local shops, nice small talk at check out lines, people DEFINITELY smile more and are much more patient and the schools are phenomenal. It's perspective, and it sounds like the author of this article may have lost that a bit. No matter where you live, it's your appreciation and perspectives that make it "home". Sounds like you may need to spend time in an actual under served area to really appreciate the charm, albeit not perfection, of Charleston and it's surrounding areas.

THE TITLE OF YOUR ARTICLE gives everyone a perfect picture of a LACK OF CLASS that you have.

Who would want to know your opinion anyway?

Clean up your mouth and maybe someone would.

Great bar, fantastic food, bringing back East Bay Street one customer at a time...

Re: “'Top Chef' winner Kristen Kish's Charleston restaurant plans on hold

It's no wonder there are staffing issues in Charleston. Owners want to work you like slaves and pay $9.00/hr. Charleston has the WORST pay I've ever seen and to top it all off...look at how many restaurants have been fined for labor violations.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

If you dont like charleston the stay away no one asked you to come here and the woman about the schools i bet were she lives i can say a few things also. Every town a d city has its faults and yes they work on them but people like this dont need to exist. They neex to worry about they own place of living and fix there marriages and put better congressmen in office. Stupid cant be fixed and to say something like that is asinine. This really showed the ignorance of these people.

And by that, I mean they already charge enough to do that. This is definitely an exciting article though. Less of these crappy restaurants that pay for reviews, the better.

^^They already do that. High prices, small portions. Case in point, any of Reitz's restaurants...

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

yea, seriously, you negative commenters are proving her point. you people here in charleston with money are only nice to tourists, not the working class. she is spot on! It is a designation that does not really hold up in reality, only in select situations.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

Hahaha, it seems all the positive comments on this fabulous perspective have been with the shared links to the story on Facebook! So, here I am to deliver a little perspective of my own, regarding the comments people have wasted all of our time with here.
Number one, most of YOU are the ones she's talking about. Number two, she is not criticizing or "smack-talking" our city, but pointing out the places where we AREN'T living up to our endless sales-pitches. If you think she's the problem, it's most likely you are. Stop being so ego-driven and immaturely hyper-sensitive. Stop taking everything so freakin' personally. OPEN YOUR EYES.

Re: “'Top Chef' winner Kristen Kish's Charleston restaurant plans on hold

It's time to go to the tip-free model. Restaurant owners should charge enough to pay a living wage to all staffers instead of forcing guests to cough up a 20% add-on to support the geisha/gigolo system of table service.
