More moronic opining from the lowland’s provincial, pasty, bloated white liberal and his race baiting fixation on identity politics. Democrats will continue to lose in the South if they follow this editor’s advice. Haire’s patronizing attitude toward people of color illustrates the broader view point of his northern brethren, in that people should be broken down into race and economic demographics so that they are easier to manipulate and control at the voting booth and in society.
While I might agree that there is no singular definition of a “Southerner”, there is a “Southern attitude” and an approach to life that cuts across all race and economic sections, and does not exist in the North. There is no such thing as Northern culture. An individual in New Jersey has little cultural connection to someone in Ohio or Michigan. That cannot be said for us though out the South. First, blacks and whites interact daily far more in the South than in the North (which in Northern cities remain mostly “tribal”). Second, white southerners have far more in common with black southerners than with their northern white equivalents. Having live extensively in both areas (I grew up in Pennsylvania, spent my summers in Tennessee, worked in NYC, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta), I can attest that a southern white can connect far more to a black southerner than a white northerner. In general, we like and share the same positions on food, music, and religion and college football (to name a few in a much longer list). And having those shared connections we have more “empathy” towards each other, which is the cornerstone of any relationship.
Juan Williams (far from being a conservative) made an excellent point in his recent article regarding the leaked Sony emails from liberal executives that can be applied to Mr. Haire, editor at the CCP:
“I imagine they do hire some black people. But those black people have to color inside the lines of what white liberals think is the right kind of black person. Black conservative have no chance in that world. Black intellectuals and even black left wingers have no chance either. But that is a different story. In restrictive confines of the white liberal world they would be seen as threating black people.”
So Chris, shows us how Mr. Williams is wrong. How many conservative people of color have you hired and have working there at the Charleston City Paper?
It's upsetting that people view skateboarding as bad for kids. It takes hours, days, weeks, and sometimes even months of practice to learn new tricks on a skateboard. Skateboarding teaches kids that working hard and practicing is important if they want to improve. That's a lesson I have carried throughout my adult life.
Jaxx you are wasting your time. Having an honest and rational conversation and discussing facts is something that liberals, and especially extremist whack jobs like mat, are incapable of doing. They have been told what to believe and if you don't agree you are racist (in this case) or are just incapable of comprehending the bullshit they spew out (in the case of mat's columns that he has to suffer through dissenting comments.) brandonfish, to his credit, at least tried to identify some of the symptoms although I will wager that we would disagree who's fault it is that those symptoms are there.
Kinsey, don't let that asshole get you down. Your coverage of what white people are eating and drinking and what events they are attending continues to be the best in the city.
Another problem is this whole "culture war" nonsense. It is a phrase that easily offended people use when their specious beliefs are called into question. Everything is an attack against them, or a war. These people are extremely dramatic and quick to react angrily and illogically and claim some sort of persecution - you know, the kinds of people who should definitely own guns.
Context - how does it work? The yeehaws he is talking about most certainly believe the 2nd Amendment is the only one in the Constitution. You never see these people at free speech rallies, or protesting the multitude of illegal searches and seizures that take place all the time. Every year gun nuts like to proclaim the government is encroaching more and more on their personal liberties. So what do they ever do about it besides head down to Walmart and buy more ammo?
BNP29412, you do realize that City Paper was the only local news outlet to cover this episode at all, right? BSB had no idea when it would air and had not alerted us that an episode had been filmed. When we found out the episode was replaying, we watched it and got a report up within the hour.
I found this link and thought it was interesting. If this data is out there, it would seem other data about police justifiable homicides would be also.
Was Tuesday, December 2nd a really busy night for your staff? Too busy to see a local person featured? Maybe if BSB hired Polished Pig Media they could get(purchase) your attention.
Only 1 or 2 restaurants on Shem Creek purchase fresh local shrimp off the boats that dock within spitting distance of them, yet for some reason the CP has been going apesh*t over lobster rolls all year. Recently, I was leading a non-profit established in order to support the seafood-producing industries right here in the area. I was contacted by an interested CP writer for an interview, and we had some very interesting discussions. As it turned out, the story did not interest the editors. They must've been too busy putting together 20 concurrent NDG stories and a lobster roll theme.
So, the approximately 50% of the US population that owns guns has both structurally unsound homes AND insect infestations? Shocking indeed!
But, even if he wasn't wrong, it's good to know that hating fellow Americans for exercising constitutional rights is cool with you, Ron.
Mario, some sure-fire advice so you don't get disappointed again: Do what I do - get off your lazy duff and wash it yourself!
cid, I'm aware of that one and dozens more and that is my whole point. Yours is a great example because it happened at the same time as the two that spawned nationwide protests, but nationally not a peep about the shooting of unarmed White Dylan Taylor. And even more telling, the fact that he was shot by a non-White cop.
And someone please let me know if the sarcasm is too dense and I need to dumb it down a little...
For 13.95 I will get 2. Bring it.
The popo really are kind of out of control lately. I think we live in dangerous times for popo and that they will shoot anyone regardless of color if they feel threatened. I was never afraid of them when I was a kid but now they make me reeealll nervous for my kids. (Probably because I could outrun most of them here in the Chuck back then and knew I wouldn't get shot in the back) I would not want to be one of the popo today for all the tea in China. I am pretty sure they wouldn't want me anyway as just my juvie record is about 10 sheets long. Hahahaha. I guess body cams on all of them everywhere is the best answer, well, except for Mt. P. they don't do much, they just give out speeding tickets to poor souls like me on our way out to Sullivans.
"F3 — a.k.a. Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith, a national men's fitness craze"
I guess technically sex counts as fitness.
"lots of hate for his fellow Americans there."
Doesn't mean he's wrong.
That excerpt from President Clements was doctored, here is the original:
"At a time of year when our thoughts are turning to family, holidays and the start of a new year – all the things that unite us and bring us joy -- it is discouraging that so many events and issues are causing division and hurt, and making many students feel unwanted at this great university. It hurts to read disrespectful and just plain mean comments in social media. Last night’s “Cripmas” party, which the university did not sanction, raised more concerns about the campus climate. Clemson is better than this.
Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion about events in Ferguson, Staten Island and the protest rallies that those events have spawned. Great universities are built on the free expression and exploration of ideas. But the free expression of opinion must not cross the line and become harassment or intimidation, just as rallies and protest marches must not cross the line to lawlessness.
Our core values – honesty, integrity and respect – must be more than just words. I plan to host a series of events in early 2015 to foster productive discussion and unity that includes a broad segment of the campus – and I hope that I can count on your active participation.
In the meantime, please be supportive of each other during this busy and sometimes stressful season."
I'm a Clemson student, this was sent to me, and I don't appreciate lies blatant misrepresentation of facts.
By the way, the news is making this racial tension thing a big deal but this is the first I've even heard of "Merrycrackermas." I can assure you, Clemson students don't give a damn about this issue, we don't associate the African American race with murderous thieves... but you can all believe that the 20th best public school in the nation is a racist and ignorant institution if it fits your backwards and broken agendas.
"you must live under a rock or you choose to not make yourself aware of things that go on in the community"
Whatever is being done clearly has had little to no effect.
"even if NOTHING was being done to stop black on black crime that does not mean that this injustice should go unnoticed. To me, that's saying exactly what you said I "implied"... why should black lives matter to anyone else when they don't matter to their own community"
Again, I never said anything remotely like that.
"Maybe you should word your thoughts differently"
Take a look at Cid95's post if you want to see it more concisely written. I'm sure you'll add words to his post to give it a racist slant as well, though.
Maybe you should take what's written for what it is.
"And i don't understand why you feel attacked"
Maybe if I point out how ignorant one must be to think Ima Oldman's post was anything other than sarcasm you'd understand.
"Thanks for the congratulations, btw :-)."
You're welcome. I'm sure you'll raise your son to be a fine man.
Don't worry Ima, unarmed whiteys gets shot too when police feel threatened.
The "Black Lives Matter" thing just doesn't pass a test of usefulness to me. Even if it's 100% successful in its goal (which is unlikely) and no controversial killings of blacks by police in the US happen ever again - that's a small fraction of violent deaths of blacks. However, if 30% of the gang / crime related violent deaths of blacks in the US could be eliminated (which does seem possible), that would be a huge savings in black lives. I can't understand why there is not as much energy, effort, press, organization, etc in that direction. Logically, that would be the most effective and useful thing to do.
