At the minimum it seems a city and a mayor that strongly support smoking bans would insist on clean electric shore power which is the industry standard in places like Miami.
There are several alternative healthcare plans put forward by republicans ...if you did some research before you drew your cartoons you might find another more worthy subject.
The minute you advertise a taco for $5.00, you have lost me. There is no way you can justify that price. Do they have fresh tuna, Kobe beef, and porterhouse steak in them? Don't be surprised if they go under real fast, like so many wanna be restaurants do in this town.
Why the bitching over the cruise ships as "ugly, polluting, bringing foreigners in to the city". Well, we have had huge cargo ships for decades. And the folks they bring ashore are only a handful of crew. They spew pollution, "uglify" the waterfront, yet they contribute greatly to the tax base. So do the tourists we have by the millions each year. IF the SPA will agree to the already limit of 2-3 per week, for only a short amount of weeks each year, I don't see the fuss being worth it all. The SPA will get what they want, as they always do. Enjoy the tourists paying for a lot of the things we would otherwise have to pay out of our taxes.
i would rather go to Zia Taqueria on james island... bacco in mtp is awesome, as is coleman pub house!! i
Surely you're aware that the strip clubs off Meeting reside in a block-sized area outside of both Charleston and North Charleston city limits, hence why they're going strong at 3 am. I haven't been there in years but I imagine they'll be hit quite hard by this as much of the business in such a shady area was from being the only place to drink after 2.
The stated problems seem to be a common failure of many newer establishments. The good typically survive and get better...the rest will go out of business. My question...How are $5 single tacos and $7 Margaritas considered 'inexpensive'?

Daniel Atwill is a home owner / resident on the opposite side of the street, and hence, a different 'block'. We do share St Philip as a common boundary. I am on the block to the west, he on the east.
So, correct & accurate. I did not say on the 'street' as is being implied. I am the last on my block. Daniel's block has only 4 (I think).
Daniel is one of the very few with a family who have chosen to stay and make a stand for the livability & residential character of the East end of Elliotborough.
2 full city blocks and not even 1/2 dozen owner occupied homes....!
We want to show some love to Bay Street Biergarten as they showed us love when allowing Bison Branding to vinyl wrap their truck.
Glad to read the fire was more of a minor setback than a catastrophe.
May we please have like/dislike buttons for the columns?
And Charleston is a port city so having ships come and go from here is preserving the character and history of Charleston. Half of East Bay Street used to be dedicated to supporting ships that were coming in and out.
Having a decent looking place for cruise ships come and go would be even better for business. I do agree, however, that they need to do whatever they can to mitigate any negatives for the locals such as a better facility and using on shore power which from all reports is less offensive.
I don't think that they are getting rich but I think that the folks working on cruise ships are doing all right over all.
Worst idea EVER! Why not preserve Charleston? Go to any harbor that consistently has cruise ships in and out of it and see what effect they have. No thanks!
"I have found my devotion to Coleman Public House growing more and more as just about the only place I go to in Mt. Pleasant where I know I will get great food/service. Try them FairGayme if you have not been."
Yes! You are not alone in this opinion. I also find Bacco to always be pretty awesome.
2,762 new jobs, he says. Jobs as servants to people like this guy and his family.
The SPA doesn't negotiate with anyone because they are going to eventually get their way whether the CCL has a valid point or not.
That being said, the people of Charleston should thank the CCL for making everything that they get their hands into unnecessarily more expensive and do everything they can to delay progress. When the much needed and much wanted 526 is finally finished they will still be fighting legal battles to shut the project down.
Great article and some very valid points and solutions have been mentioned here. Unfortunately, I am sure the Coastal Conservation League will disagree. Just as they do with most every project that is about bringing progress to Charleston (the Port expansion, I-526, deepening the harbor, etc.). Dana Beach has made a very wealthy living off of filing litigation that opposes any progress in Charleston, all while under the guise of 'conserving' HIS interest and filling his pockets.
For those thinking I made a leap of faith regarding the Clemson football team's belief that God is on their side — or that they can do things to curry the Lord's favor — I ask you to revisit this quote from Wolverton's piece:
"Dozens of other players also display signs of faith. Many wear orange and purple wristbands inscribed with Bible verses, which one player's parents bought for the whole team. Others have biblical references on their Twitter bios. 'Don't follow me, follow Jesus," says the page of one Clemson recruit.
Game days are awash in religious ritual. Players mark their faces with crosses, write inspirational messages on their wrist tape ('Blessed'), and kneel together in groups to pray."
At the very least, these players adorn their bodies in Xian iconography and Biblical passages for good luck or they actually believe that these symbols and rituals prove their devotion to the Lord and, as such, the team's faith should be reciprocated into a victory.
Particularly telling is this statement from former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden on the matter (http://tommybowden.com/clemson-vs-georgia-…
"Most of the college football world watched the exciting, down to the wire, Clemson vs Georgia football game on TV Saturday night. Many Christian sports enthusiasts know that the two Head Coaches are professing Christians that are not ashamed to take a stand publicly. Both of these men will speak at various faith based events during the off season. This leads me to the question that people ask all the time, 'Does God care about football games and how does he pick which Christian coach should win?'"
That question that Bowden is asked is particularly telling: "Does God care about football games and how does he pick which Christian coach should win?" The implication here, at least among the Christians who have asked Bowden this question, is that God will regularly grant a victory to a Christian coach over a non-believer simply bc the coach is a Christian.
