Re: “Kudos to the P&C for writing about school choice, but I wish it had been sooner

School choice should be relegated to having a choice between programs such as Military, Academic or Garrett academies (or other specific disciplines) not being able to not go to a school with the same program out of your area. Sending your kid to the same program in a different attendance zone should not be allowed.

The spending on the facilities has happened in the case of NCHS and NCES and is happening with Chicora, slated for Morningside and Hursey, but until the parents who have the ability to be more involved they will both have to deal with the leftovers. Simple comparison, learning disabilities students in NCES are ~10%, at Harbor View Elementary 3%, NCHS 20%, Wando 6%. Want to gripe about the low graduation rate? Remember that the learning disabled are included in that calculation. You want more money for teachers? Then send your kids there and increase the student population.

So you are left with a school that has the kids with the poorest chance of success and only the kids with the poorest chance of success. It is not because they are stupid. It is not because their parents don't care. It is because, for whatever reason, they have to worry about problems that most of the kids and parents in the better schools (which are at least far more diverse or majority white) have to worry about. The kids on the sports teams wouldn't be getting a ride home from the coach at Wando. An academic magnet parent would never dream of pulling their child out of school half way through the year to where they would lose credit for all of the work they did.

This, like many social engineering programs, ends up helping some and hurting the ones that need it the most.

Re: “Kudos to the P&C for writing about school choice, but I wish it had been sooner

I assume you are familiar with the song "The Trees" by Rush. It's the same logic at work here by anti-choice authoritarians. Teach to the lowest common denominator. Make everyone equal by holding back the top performers using hatchet, ax, and saw, if necessary.

Every high school attempting to offer every opportunity to every student is not an efficient use of limited public resources. On the other hand, each high school offering a unique opportunity combined with the ability of parents and students to choose which of those opportunities best suit their needs is a much more efficient way to educate.

If we want to make schools more equal, we should make people less poor.

Re: “SCE&G seeks yet another rate hike to fund a struggling nuclear project

he money spent so far on this taxpayer boondoggle could have put solar panels and storage batteries in every household in SC. And while it may not emit CO2 during operation, 12+ years of construction along with intense CO2 usage concrete have contributed tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. Plus, every nuclear plant operating releases radioactive emissions into the air and water. Nuclear is expensive and dirty, and this was a bad decision by the utility, and worse, by the PSC, as climbing rates show.

Re: “With or without King Dusko, King Street was never a music hub

I miss Cumberland's on a daily basis, and losing King Dusko is a blow - however...

When I think music hub, I think midtown Atlanta, Austin's 6th Street or Elliston Place/Broadway in Nashville. Hell, even the warehouse/chinatown district of Houston fits better.

I mean, the whole Mercy Lounge/Cannery Ballroom/High Watt building in Nashville gets more viable acts in 8 weeks than we do in a year.

Charleston does not, and never has had, a music hub. Charleston Music Hall is getting better acts, but the acoustics in that place are spotty depending on where you're sitting and it doesn't exactly encourage getting up and dancing.

Re: “Kudos to the P&C for writing about school choice, but I wish it had been sooner

I know you don't comment on your own articles, but I would like someone to point out where in this P&C article there is any discussion about school choice. The article merely asserts magnet schools (and Academic Magnet in particular) are hurting NCHS. The facts used to prove this assertion focus mainly on the geographic distance between AMHS and NCHS.

That this article and the word Pulitzer are often in the same sentence is travesty for journalism. Balance and objectivity are abandoned. The information presented is mostly day-in-the-life with raw statistics presented in sidebars with no context and no discussion. Nowhere is it mentioned that the majority of the students who left NCHS went to Garrett Academy (294) and Military Magnet (94). The reader is left to discover that for themselves. There is a random mention of the fact that MMA is 3 miles from NCHS and GAT is 4 miles from NCHS. Because geographic distance is very important to the "discussion", I guess.

Other children attending other schools is not the reason that the children at NCHS are failing.

Awesome story. Thank you for sharing your gifts, Rodney and Stacy, and many blessings on those students who were open to receiving them.

Re: “Park Circle parents seek solutions after P&C series focusing on North Charleston High

This is such a disgusting "series". There is no discussion of magnet schools in Charleston County. Yet the story freely and repeatedly blames the Academic Magnet and SOTA for all the problems at NCHS. That the author was fixated on the AMHS is undeniable. We are told repeatedly that AMHS is only 1 mile away from NCHS, as if this is relevant to something. We are told twice that AMHS STOLE 54 students from NCHS.

We are never told that primarily African-American Garrett Academy of Technology magnet school took 294 students from NCHS. And the primarily African-American Military Magnet Academy took another 94 students from NCHS. This is roughly the same number of students who currently attend NCHS. Are these parents white? Go tell the parents of these students that they are selfish assholes who don't care about their neighbors.

Instead of reporting a story that is balanced and informative, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist decided to manufacture a race problem in the school system. It's clearly aimed at influencing the new Superintendent. The author sure didn't let any facts about magnet schools get in the way of her political agenda.

Get on some meds to help with the depression. Perhaps even some pot (yes, it can have some positive effects on cancer, and definitely help with the nausea, but mostly for the depression---it didn't help my depression, but it may well help yours).
You shouldn't be more depressed than you must be.
Good luck!!!

Re: “A coffee cretin gets schooled at the Counter Culture training center

Unfortunately, yirgacheffe coffee's, even naturals. tend to be very, very tea-like. I'm more interested in coffee's that offer flavors that coffee is best at providing.
If you can find them, the harrar region can produce excellent coffee. LIkewise, Yemen can produce tremendous brews(dragonfly has a wonderful yemen right now that is truly exotic).
Lastly, look for naturals (that is unwashed/unpulped) beans. These are beans that have been picked, and the fruit was allowed to ferment while attached to the bean. It can impart massive amounts of flavor.

Re: “Park Circle parents seek solutions after P&C series focusing on North Charleston High

I don't believe you read the article or if you did you don't understand that the stories in there are typical of most of the kids in this and other similar schools, not anomolies. This is a situation where the kids who have the most support at home and at school are pulled out and the ones with the least are left there to get by on their own. What that does is put the teachers and administrators in a no win situation. They are left with the kids with learning disabilities, parents that can't get involved due to their own circumstances, low outside funding for activities and lack of community involvement because the parents who would normally be taking some of the load off are doing so at other schools.

How much money do you throw at a problem before you realize that you cannot educate a person who is not interested in learning?

I'm so sorry to hear this. I don't know you but I know the situation :( My brother died from a brain tumor August 6th 2007, left his 4 yr old daughter. I made fuckcancer.net in his memory. The blog there is pretty brutal but its the truth of everything that happened. There is always hope. As long as you're not on stage 4 I think you shouldn't lose faith <3
